30 minute postpartum pelvic steaming, also known as vaginal steaming or yoni steaming, is a healing, proven self-care ritual.
What is Pelvic Steaming?
Results from the first Western Study on postpartum vaginal steaming: Fourth Trimester Vaginal Steam Study indicate that vaginal steaming has a positive impact on a number of postpartum healing indicators, including blood pressure, pulse, uterine restoration, reduction of weight and waist size, healing of tears, gapping and swelling, the expulsion of lochia, bowel regularity and hemorrhoid reduction.
1. Postpartum pelvic steaming helps to dispel lochia
In postpartum, after uterine involution occurs, bleeding may still be present. As it darkens from bright red blood to a deeper brown-ish red, the lochia is a mixture of mucus and blood. Postpartum yoni steaming helps resolve the heavy brown flow and encourages the lochia to liquify with a quicker release and cleansing of the uterus. Imagine you fill a jar a quarter way with white glue and let it harden overnight. You tip it upside-down and the glue doesn’t budge. This resembles mucous stuck to the uterine walls. That jar placed over a pot of steaming water will melt the glue, liquifying it, and it will slide out.
Clearing out lochia:
- encourages the uterus return to pre-pregnancy size and position
- reduces postpartum contractions
- bring cycles into a more regular pattern
- soothe dryness while moisturizing and disinfecting
- helps reduce the chance of infection or fever
2. Postpartum yoni steaming increases circulation, dispersing water retention
Unaddressed water retention turns to fat after 3-4 weeks. One study explains postpartum vaginal steaming supports quickened weight loss, with women shedding weight after childbirth.
3. Pelvic steaming reduces scar tissues even from surgical births
Especially with cesarean births, scar tissue forms in the pelvic region which can cause complications down the road such as incontinence, prolapse, and issues for the next pregnancy or birth experience. Pelvic steaming can help promote circulation and decrease the restricted blood flow while reducing scar tissue. In addition, those that have had a cesarean birth find the “after birth” takes longer to clear out and subside, however pelvic steaming can increase the cleansing process. Pelvic steaming also aids in maintaining the integrity of your pelvic floor and improves prolapse if it appears from either a cesarean or vaginal birth.
4. Vaginal steaming decreases postpartum depression and indirectly aids milk production
Since the cervix is still open during 4-6 weeks after birthing, steam reaches the uterine walls through the vaginal canal. This stimulation releases oxytocin, the bonding hormone that increases the feeling of safety, calm, and happiness. This happy/love hormone helps prevent postpartum depression while oxytocin is a big part of supporting milk supply as well.
5. Postpartum pelvic steaming helps lift the uterus and organs, eliminating prolapse and incontinence
With its rising action, vaginal steaming allows everything to lift back into place which then reduces bladder incontinence which is very common in postpartum but is not normal. Incontinence is a sign of incomplete postpartum healing and is something we don’t have to just deal with or have surgery to fix.
6. Vaginal steaming tightens the vaginal canal and opening
As with a facial, steam lifts and tightens – and when vaginal tissues tighten, they hold the uterus in the optimal position, along with other organs, which helps prevent prolapse.
7. Postpartum yoni steaming reduces perineal swelling
Swelling of the vulva is decreased, and therefore pain in the perineum is decreased as the inflammation is reduced. Vaginal steaming also helps tears and stitches.
8. Pelvic steaming heals hemorrhoids
Some women don’t know that straining due to constipation in pregnancy can form hemorrhoids, and they later recognize they have hemorrhoids while in postpartum. Pelvic steaming heals the entire pelvic floor region. 70% of humans will have a hemorrhoid by the time they’re 70 years old. Steaming can heal them and also prevent them, along with the pain and itchiness they bring.
9. Postpartum yoni steaming aids menstrual cycles
The cervix remains open for 4-6 weeks after childbirth, making it an optimal time for a full uterine reset through postpartum yoni steaming. Birthing people who received postpartum vaginal steaming reported experiencing healthier periods than before they conceived.
